Why we named this hike: K5 HIKE?

With that we would like to emphasize that along this hike, which passes through 5 countries, people will welcome you generously and willingly as an open-handed host.
The initiators of the k5hike project, by using the letter K, wanted to draw attention to the people (who inspired them for this project) and whose life achievements are noticed in almost all countries where k5hike takes place: KNAFELC ALOJZIJ, KUGY JULIUS, KENDA JAKOB, KARLIN ALMA and KAŽIPOT.                                     

KNAFELC ALOJZIJ: A committed mountaineer, expert cartographer… He developed a simple yet eye-catching blaze design (a white circle surrounded by a red ring) which helps hikers find their way in Slovenia and some of ex Yugoslavian republics, for more than 100 years. KUGY JULIUS:lawyer by profession, was an excellent mountaineer, a mountain writer, the discoverer and researcher of the Julian Alps. KENDA JAKOB: a long distance hiker, writer and the first Slovenian who implemented the circular walking trail encompassing the Slovenian mountain world – the shorter version of K5hike.

PROJECT K5 HIKE

About Slovenian transversal K5 hike

K5hike is a nearly 1,500 km long hike that is covered in an average of 60 days. Of course, it can be passed in two or three completed stages. But in any case, you will need to be mentally and physically well prepared for this hike. We will help you with advice for preparing and carrying out the hike. Under the BEST HIKES, you can find suggestions for some shorter and less demanding hikes, which, in our opinion, are the ideal preparation for the k5hike due to the principle of gradualness.

 

We named the project K5Hike.eu because, among other things, we want to convey to hikers with the proposed route (as the Semitic letter K=kaph, which means open hands, says) that people will welcome them with open
arms on the trails that run through 5 friendly countries. Before we submit the final version of the route, we will walk these hiking trails again with our friends from Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia.

When we have got the idea for K5Hike?

After finishing K1, K2 and K3 hikes (we named the routes after the way we walked them)

K4= transversal through the 4 most extreme points of Slovenia

We walked all of the above mentioned hikes and all intermediate points in 2020 and 2021, thus completing the circuit along the borders of Slovenia.
Within the framework of the K3 project, in 2023, we laid out and walked connecting routes from the proposed transversals to our hometowns.

We wanted to be a little more daring J. Kenda. (www.transverzala.si) and extended his hike more on the southern leg of his Transverzala.

It was a really bold move and we had a lot of debates about where K4 hike route should go. Anyone familiar with Slovenian trails knows how difficult it is to choose the most interesting hiking trail along the southern, eastern and northern Slovenian borders. In the end, the SPP-K4 route was created, which includes all four extreme points of Slovenia:

  • The most northern point: the boundary stone of the A115 above Budinci on Goričko
  • The most southernt point: Kot pri Damlju on the Croatian border
  • The most eastern point: Pince (on the border between Croatia, Mažarska and Slovenia
  • The most south-western point of Slovenia: Debeli rtič

We believe that when you walk all of those hikes, that we have arranged according to the difficulty scale from K1-K4, you will easily walk even the most demanding k5hike. And then you will be able to say to yourself, give me 5. I have done k5hike!

The letter K originate in the Semitic letter kaph, which is also the symbol for an open hand.

This, in turn, was likely adapted by Semitic tribes who had lived in Egypt from the hieroglyph for “hand” representing /ḏ/ in the Egyptian word for hand, ⟨ḏ-r-t⟩ (likely pronounced /ˈcʼaːɾat/ in Old Egyptian).
