Invitation to the K5hike project

We would like to invite you to participate in the EU project: Let’s connect the most beautiful hiking trails of 5 neighboring countries (Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia) of the Republic of Slovenia.

We already carried out a hike along the oldest Slovenian transverzala  and then in the second phase a hike along the southern border of Slovenia from Ankaran – Hodoš and finally to Maribor, which covered:

  • The most northern point: the boundary stone of the A115 above Budinci on Goričko (on the Hungarian Border)
  • The most southernt point: Kot pri Damlju on the Croatian border
  • The most eastern point: Pince (on the border between Croatia, Hungary and Slovenia)
  • The most south-western point of Slovenia: Debeli rtič on the Italian border

Hikes along: Slovenian-Austrian, Italian, Hungarian border

Now, in tracing are 3 extended trails. We will also carry out hikes along the Slovenian-Austrian border from Tromejnik (border point between Hungary, Austria and Slovenia) to Austrian town Bad Bad Radkersburg, then via Cmurek, Spielfield to Plački stolp, Svečina (Road with a Heart).

At Žalcarjev vrh we will start the Mountain Trail over hills of Kozjak: from Maribor – Dravograd. Via Peca, Olševa (Govce) we will descend to Jezersko and almost at the end of the Karavanke (Rožec) we will descend to Dovje and from there to Kranjska gora.

From there we will continue the trail along the Julian Trail and according to the proposal of our extended version to Nova Gorica and then on Italian side of border to Divino and Sistiano. We will conclude the trail in Ankaran in Slovenia, where we started the second phase of the project, i.e. a hike along the southern border of Slovenia

Project name suggestions

Are the project and website names: www.K5HIKE.EU convincing enough for you or should the name be more descriptive, e.g. Let the EU travel along the borders of the Republic of Slovenia, Cross-border friendship paths… With the name k5hike, we want to inform hikers about the proposed route that people will welcome them with open arms on the routes that run through 5 friendly countries, as the interpretation of the Semitic letter K (K=kaph, which means open arms) also suggests. With the letter K, we want to highlight the project proponents: the KAŽIPOT association, and the following people who inspired us: writer and hiker Jakob KENDA (one of the first to implement the proposal for where the SPP1 circular route should run, Julius Kugy (a great mountain lover), Alojz Knafelc (author of the red and white hiking trail) and writer and world traveler Alma KARLIN.

Where should K5hike.eu hiking trails be located?

Since we are aware that it is unwise to build new hiking trails, as our trailblazers have difficulty finding enough time, money and other resources to maintain existing trails, our goal is for k5HIKE.EU to mostly follow existing trails. But there is still time to submit your suggestion as to why it would be better for the trail to run elsewhere than our team has suggested. We ask for alternative route proposals that will present the following advantages: – there are several existing well-maintained hiking trails (thematic, mountain, walking trails, etc.) on the other route – the route runs through terrain that is more hiker-friendly (fewer kilometers on asphalt), – there are more natural, cultural and other attractions on the route – the route runs through terrain where sustainable tourism development will take place in the short term and at the same time no industrial development is planned, – there are mountain, tourism and other organizations with sufficient human, financial and other capital in the vicinity of the alternative route that are willing to take care of this route.

7 phases of the project

The project will be implemented in 7 phases:

Preparation of route proposal

Preparation of a route proposal and test routing, checking accommodation and other capacities needed by hikers, selection of hikers which would walk on planed routes with local guides and representatives of local tourist associations and organizations.

Deciding on the final route proposal

Deciding on the final route proposal and preparing projects that will enable sustainable tourism development of villages and smaller towns along the route – the new route.

Submitting projects to tenders

Submitting projects to national and EU tenders

Route testing

Testing the route with hikers of different profiles (young people, hikers – pensioners, foreigners – participants of the EU youth call). – see EU project: Hiking trails of five friendly countries.

Marking, and GPS tracing, map making

Marking and GPS tracing, production of maps and collection cards, and completion of a website with all information about the route and possible events along the way.

Project evaluation

Project evaluation and corrections of the above products.

Opening of the hiking trail

Promotion, marketing and opening of a new hiking trail.

K5 HIKE PROJECT

Starting points for discussions

Because we want to be able to apply at EU tenders at the first call for proposals this year (and we still have a lot of work to do before then!), we would like to meet you in person as soon as possible, which is very important for such a large project.

We have agreed with the other partners on the route to hold meetings in the form of a short working breakfast or dinner, followed by a hike along the possible route and a visit to the previously mentioned key points along the route…

Therefore, we would like to ask you to prepare till the next meeting the following information:

Your proposal for routes along the Slovenian-Austrian border
Your proposal for routes along the Slovenian-Italian-Croatian and Hungarian border.
Proposals for overnight stays (restaurants, shops, etc.) and other facilities necessary for hikers along the route.
Proposals for connecting routes to the aforementioned routes or expanding hiking routes from the proposed routes (1 day trip, 3 – 7 day stays and events at individual points) with a calendar of traditional events.
A list of people, organizations… (tourist, hunting associations, people in municipalities, youth centers and youth organizations, as the project is also intended for them …) that could help us with the project.
A list of all tenders (including local and regional) in which your organization and I could apply together. So far, 6 organizations (4 mountaineering associations and two hiking organizations) and 2 City Municipalities and the Municipality of Ankaran have already joined the project.
